About Chris Robinson

Chris Robinson

Hi – I’m the Chris Robinson behind the radio shows and this website!

Thanks for wanting to know a little more about me and my life in travel. It’s always great to share a little of my personal life and experiences with my listeners and readers - because travelling is such a personal experience and my passion is for enthusing people with a lust for travel.

I’m one of those lucky guys who always knew what I wanted to do. And I blame my wonderful parents, Kate and Jim, who took me on a three month journey around the world from the UK when I was an impressionable six year old kid. From that point on, I was fascinated by atlases and Geography was my star subject at school (Maths – not so much!).

I spent six months as a teenager travelling overland in an old army truck across Europe, through Turkey, Iran, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India to Nepal and the Himalaya.  It’s where I did my growing up and it ensured that my love of travel was for life. One day after returning from Kathmandu, I began my college life at Magdalene College, Cambridge – studying Geography, naturally.

I was fortunate to be in the right place at the right time (I have often been lucky in this regard): Cambridge University was a global centre of academic excellence for Geography, and I was able to make the most of my time there. This included organizing the Cambridge University Bolivian Altiplano Expedition 1977 which took me through Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Argentina and Bolivia to work on my dissertation on Lake Titicaca. Subsequent to this work I became a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society.

It was a natural step to start my career with the world’s largest vacation company at the time – Thomson Holidays in the UK, now part of TUI Travel, the latest holder of that title. For the next 25 years I worked within a number of the big tour operators in both Europe and Canada, heading up their marketing teams.  Not only did this provide wonderful opportunities for travel, but it also gave me the inside scoop on the travel industry as a whole.

I began broadcasting Travel Shows as far back as 1997 and left the corporate world to produce and host The Chris Robinson Travel Shows in Ontario and Quebec full time in 2003.  We are now up to over 1000 shows and they have become Canada’s most popular radio travel shows.  I have broadcasted on location from destinations as diverse as Australia, Europe and the Caribbean.

When I am not travelling, I live in downtown Toronto with my wife of 33 years, Dara, and my two sons Pip and Tim. As a family we have travelled to 40 countries around the world and to all 13 Canadian Provinces and Territories. My personal account is approaching 150 countries – and yet there are still so many more to visit!

Thanks again for taking the time to read this, and now get out there and start planning your next trip!
