Last week I was on location at the new Discovery Centre at Fort Henry National Historic Site in Kingston – right in the heart of the Great Waterway Region of South Eastern Ontario. Laced together by the sparkling St Lawrence River, Rideau Canal, Bay of Quinte and Lake Ontario, this stunning destination serves up all the ingredients for a perfect getaway that’s close to home.

After broadcasting the Travel Shows from Fielding Estate Winery on the Niagara Escarpment last year, we moved eastwards this year to Prince Edward County. With typically friendly hospitality, we broadcasted the shows in the sunshine overlooking the vines of The Grange of Prince Edward Vineyards and Estate Winery with Caroline Granger, President and CEO of the winery.

This is a city truly connected to the water. It sits astride the eastern end of Lake Ontario, where the St Lawrence begins its journey through the Thousand Islands and where the UNESCO World Heritage Rideau Canal starts its northwards course towards Ottawa.

So close, yet so under-appreciated: Wine Country Ontario! There are four regions to choose from: Niagara Escarpment and Twenty Valley; Niagara-on-the-Lake; Lake Erie North Shore and Pelee Island; and Prince Edward County.

It was very exciting to see UNESCO World Heritage Status awarded to the Rideau Canal, Fort Henry and the Kingston Fortifications in 2007 - and it remains Ontario's first and only UNESCO site.

Take a big, deep breath and let the stresses and strains fall away as you enter civilized Stratford, Ontario! Nestled around a pretty river – called the Avon, naturally – this is what small town living used to be about…but with a cultural twist.

Where better to celebrate the Canadian Winter than in our National’s Capital? A two day short break enabled me to sample some of the delights of Ottawa.  Of course winter in Ottawa means Christmas Lights and Winterlude.
